Charae Whetstone
Director of Special Services
Ms. Charae Whetstone was appointed Director of Special Services in September 2024. Previously she served as the 7-12 Instructional Supervisor for Special Education and Visual and Performing Arts departments. In her role as the Special Education Supervisor, Ms. Whetstone worked collaboratively with both the district administrative team and Child Study Teams to ensure the alignment of curriculum, to provide fitting supports to meet the needs of a diverse population of learners, and to develop special programs. A continued effort is the collaborative development of Community-Based Instruction and Structured Learning Experiences for students in Kingsway’s Special Program STEP (Structured Transitional Education Program).
Experience and Accomplishments: Ms. Whetstone taught Special Education in various classroom settings and subject areas, and at multiple grade levels (Pre-K through 12th). During her time as a teacher, Ms. Whetstone was honored as Teacher of the Year. She served as Department Chair and Literacy Content Lead and spearheaded several successful school-wide initiatives including the Three for Me Program, which strove to increase parental involvement and improve climate and culture within the school. Always an active member of the school community, Ms. Whetstone coached both girls’ basketball and cheerleading. In 2017, Ms. Whetstone was trained and certified by the New Jersey State Department of Education as a Teacher Coach with a focus on social-emotional learning and behavioral interventions. She spent the next few years providing professional development and consultation to teachers, staff, parents, and school administrators.
Education and Studies: Ms. Whetstone graduated from The College of New Jersey, where she received her B.S. in Special Education, with minor studies in Psychology. During her undergraduate experience, Ms. Whetstone provided reading intervention and instruction to at-risk students within the Ewing and Trenton School Districts. She assisted with the coordination of summer sports camps at TCNJ, including The New Jersey Special Olympics. Ms. Whetstone continued her education at Rowan University, where she was a member of the National Honor Society of Graduate and Professional Students. She received an M.A. in School Administration and a certificate in Supervision.
