School of Health Professions (SHP)

Kingsway Regional High School's School of Health Professions focuses on exposing students to aspects of various health professions (i.e. nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical assistant, surgical technologist, athletic trainer, etc.) and builds related skills and knowledge.  Outlined below are key topics and skills of each required Health Professions course, which are sequential to ensure students have a solid foundation and understanding to be successful in the program and beyond.   

 

(GRADE 10) Health Professions I: Introduction to Health Professions

  • History, careers and the evolution of health care (telemedicine)
  • Legal and ethical issues in Healthcare (HIPPA, malpractice, etc.)
  • Vital signs (BP, pulse, respiration, pulse, pain, temperature, etc.)
  • Bloodborne pathogens (OSHA – standard and universal precautions)
  • Extrication and transportation techniques and spine boarding
  • Emergency equipment application and use (splinting, wrapping, first aid, emergency illness

 

(GRADE 11) *Health Professions II: Kinesiology and Injury Recognition

  • Body tissues & identification (muscles, bone, alignments, cartilage, skin, etc.)
  • Therapeutic Modalities (thermal, electrical, mechanical, and ultrasound)
  • Stages of healing for soft and bone tissue
  • Soft tissue and bone injuries
  • Kinesiology (joints of the body, motions of the body, terms of relation)
  • Examination of musculoskeletal injuries

*Students will also be required to take Anatomy and Physiology concurrently with this course. 

OR  (Veterinary Track | GRADE 11) *Veterinary Science

  • Integration of the biology and management of animals
  • Foundational experience in veterinary science:
    • Characteristics of animals, their anatomical & behavioral differences,
    • Biological classification as well as their ecological importance
    • Debate and research topics related to artificial selection, sanitation procedures, infectious diseases, and proper animal care.
    • Veterinary science careers, terminology, and animal classification

(GRADE 12) Health Professions III: Seminar and Practicum

  • How to read and interpret research
  • How to use a database for research
  • Clinical etiquette
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical examination
  • SOAP and HOPs, electronic evaluation
  • Musculoskeletal injuries (topographical examinations, special tests, anatomical structures)
  • Clinical rotations at partnering institutions (journal entries and discussions)
