    Business Leadership Academy Design Phase

    • To achieve its goals, Kingsway’s Business Leadership Academy (BLA) includes the following:

       

      • A course sequence based on research of collegiate business administration programs
      • Instruction that is student-centered and focused on real-world connections that require critical and creative thinking as well as collaborative problem solving; an emphasis is placed on project-based learning to engage students through application
      • A cohort model to support collaboration and interpersonal relationships among and between students and faculty
      • A steering committee composed of District and school-level administrators as well as teachers, counselors, and local business professionals  

       

      Phase I
      Students who express an interest in college majors in one of the various areas of business administration are excellent candidates for the program. Students may apply for acceptance into Phase I of the program at the end of their 8th grade year; applicants must be enrolled in Algebra I (or higher) in the 8th grade and then successfully complete it (B or better) for admission.  Prior academic achievement, interest, standardized testing data, and teacher recommendations will be significant components in the selection process.  

       

      Phase II
      To continue into Phase II of the Academy, students must meet the following criteria:

       

      • Active participation in DECA during phase I
      • Service learning requirements have been met during phase I (20 hours per year is required of all BLA students)
      • A minimum GPA of 2.0 or “C” in all Academy courses, and no less than a 2.0 overall GPA during their freshman and sophomore year
      • Exemplary school conduct and professional behavior
      • Excellent attendance and punctuality
      • Enrollment in Summer Seminar
      • Proper business attire on designated days
      • Recommendation of the Academy Advisor and Academy Counselor
      • Submission of an approved resume and cover letter (to steering committee members) – to be kept as part of student’s electronic portfolio
